Adele Buttolph: A Two-Week Photo Journey Through Namibia

July 19, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Join us for an in person photo presentation by Adele Buttolph.

Namibia, positioned on the west coast of southern Africa, is a remarkable country for its desert landscapes, wildlife, and people.  It is a country having the world’s tallest dunes and oldest desert.  Namibia also has a remarkable wealth of wildlife.  In this talk, Adele will present a travelogue from an October 2022 trip to Namibia.  The presentation will focus on a selection of locations with captivating landscapes, a sand-filled ghost town, and wildlife.  The discussion will also touch on the people that we encountered, accommodations and settings, and conservation work being conducted by two organizations.

Special locations and moments from Namibia will include, among others, Dead Vlei – a pan of ancient dead acacia trees surrounded by towering dunes, Kolmanskop – an abandoned diamond mining town filling with sand, and Etosha National Park – numerous species of African wildlife.  We will also visit Okonjima Nature Preserve which focuses on conservation of wild cats, and N/a’an ku se Foundation  Wildlife Sanctuary where we go for a walk with a rescued caracal named Misty.

Adele Buttolph Biography 2023

Adele grew up in Florida and bought her first camera (circa 1978) when she was in high school.  Prior to working with photographic media, she was self-taught in pencil drawing in which portraits were her main subjects.  The film camera opened new avenues of creativity, both with the camera and in the darkroom.  College and career paused her photography until around 2006, shortly after moving to Wallowa County.

Adele’s photographic interests and expression lie mainly in travel and nature/landscape photography.  She is an avid traveler both within the US and abroad.  Her travel photography has included several genres covering landscape, wildlife and birds, street, architecture, and portraits.
