Welcome to an exploration in the techniques of layering paint to create a foundation for your painted story to unfold. This is a fun and playful process that allows intuition to shine though in the forms of color, shape and the hidden beauty in negative space. Prepare to abandon old habits, and discover a new way to approach your canvas and
finished work through this guided journey.

Group exercise will include instructor and peer feed back, movement to music, yoga and story sharing. These exercises help ignite the creative mind. Please bring a small collection of things that inspire: images, objects and findings to create a your vision board. The boards could include flora and fauna, rust, ceramic pieces, and magazine clippings. Together we will create vision boards to share for inspiration. You will have 2 completed works to take home at the finish of the workshop.

Words on her latest body of work…
“Each new canvas is met with an openness and whimsey of color. Through a process of layering and washing away, I allow the paint to take form in an organic way. I listen to the shapes that come through these layers as they tell me a story and lead the composition. It has been an amazing practice of letting go and allowing intuition to take hold.”

Rachel Brodkey is a Portland-based artist specializing in paint and color. Surrounded by the world of art from early childhood, Rachel’s early influences include classical music and ballet training. Saturated in the colorful palette that was a mix of New York City and the New Jersey shore, she has developed a comprehensive body of work that is full of color, movement and life. Rachel’s early summer studies at Rhode Island School of Design and Parsons, and her Bachelor’s degree at Ohio University drew together her multifaceted background of creativity. This solid foundation launched her move to the Pacific Northwest, ready for new impressions and inspiration.

After many years of collaborative work in theater, Burning Man and Arts Education, Rachel has found a the vision and voice reflected in her present solo paintings, inspired by her Portland community. Other important projects include… Props and craft construction at Rosie O’Donnell Show, Saturday Night Live, Cabaret at Studio 54 among other Broadway credits, and Co-founder Portland’s Third Rail Theater Company. After years of working and teaching in large scale collaborations, she felt it was time to return to the studio for some solo visioning, and is excited to share these discoveries with new communities.

She is an experienced interior decorative painter and has led acknowledged workshops for other working artists.
