Follow Up Discussion! RE: Dr. June Lorenzo on Community Peace & Justice – Talk
October 8 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
FreeFollow Up Discussion Regarding Last Week’s Talk:
Dr. June Lorenzo on
Community Peace & Justice
Tuesday, October 8th 12-1pm
Hello Friends,
Thanks to the many of you for coming to hear Dr. Lorenzo’s fine talk on the DOD and on uranium mining on her home Dine–Navajo–reservation.
There was a lot of discussion during and after the talk about the Doctrine of Discovery and American Law. I suggest that we come together again next Tuesday, October 8, for a full-on discussion of the DOD. Here’s a quote to whet your appetite (you will recall Dr. L:orenzo referring to this case.)
“In the US Supreme Court in the 1823 case Johnson v. McIntosh, Chief Justice John Marshall’s opinion in the unanimous decision held ‘that the principle of discovery gave European nations an absolute right to New World lands.’ In essence, American Indians had only a right of occupancy, which could be abolished.”
Tell your friends. You do not have to have attended yesterday’s talk to engage in this one! And church people, please pass on the word to people who are probably not on my email list.
Thanks–and see you here!
Rich
Please note June will not be in attendance. We are continuing the discussion!
