About Judy Allen:
I have experimented with quilt making over 25 years, with very precise designs moving toward abstract images. My recent time at the Gee’s Bend Quilters’ Retreat (Nov 2023) challenged me to create a narrative vision of Gee’s Bend set beside the Alabama River, honoring the profound persistence of black women to create art and support their families.
About Eileen Trudeau: Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan , eldest of five
Early interests: sewing, embroidery, gardening, science, medicine
My mother taught herself to embroider when she contracted tuberculosis and was confined to a sanitarium. She eventually passed on this art to her childfen. She also started the tradition of creating quilts for newborn family members.
That interest blossomed several years later when I discovered the world of art quilting, also known as improvisational quilting. I was fascinated br the work of Jean Wells, Nancy Crow and the women of Gee’s Bend. I studied the historical connections with Amish quilts and I marveled at the cross-cultural links among African – American, African, and Aboriginal textile art.
I have no formal training in textiles or quilting. I learn by doing.and sharing what I create with family, friends and fellow quilters. I recently contributed to a family quilt that will be given to the newest member of our family Wyatt Francis Gabbert-Pope born August 31, 2024. The theme is bunnies.
