Dan is very excited to present his jazz favorites with some surprise arrangements and originals. Jazz was Dan’s foundation while studying under true jazz greats at City College in New York City. He was inspired by his teachers, John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet and Lee Konitz sax player for Miles Davis. Later he found success with Grammy nominated pop band Nu Shooz and was a recipient of a gold record for the hit song “I Can’t Wait”, a song that is still given air play worldwide. He also was a part of The Crazy 8’s, a popular World Beat band in the 1980’s and is twice inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame.
Dan is joined by his favorite Northwest guitarist Chuck Everett. Chuck enjoys a history of versatility and has been entertaining and delighting audiences both live and as a studio musician. He performed in Hawaii which brought him on tour to the mainland and now is the backbone of Portland variety band Pressure Point.
Upright Bassist and Luthier, Pete Lampfe has been performing alongside Chuck and Dan for many years. Pete began performing live in 1986, went on to teach middle school and high school orchestra and band after receiving his teaching degree in 1992. He now has limited his teaching because of his active performance schedule. In 1983 Pete began his journey as a Luthier and has repaired and built basses for Jazz greats such as Esperanza Spalding.
Carl Smith and I played and recorded together in The Crazy 8s from 1981- 1993 and 2003- 2018. He wrote several of our percussion driven college radio hits, and played on all 7 albums. I first heard him play some amazing grooves and fills when the Crazy 8s performed on Star Search (and won) in the 80s. He collaborated with Ghanaian Master Drummer Obo Addy on Crazy 8s 2nd L.P Nervous in Suburbia, giving the band its amazing world beat groove. He also played with Rubberneck in the 1990s and performed and recorded with Aarron Meyer.
Carl now plays with Sabroso a popular Portland Latin Jazz Band, and I’m proud to be playing with him again, and he’s still got the energy and groove he gave us in our Crazy 8 days ! Our 2018 collaboration with Carl can be heard HERE. “IT’S WHAT YOU DO WITH IT” by Danny Schauffler Todd Duncan and The Crazy 8s. What he brings to our quartet with the Samba, Rumba, and Latin Jazz grooves on Congas, Bongos and Timbales, will energize and bring joy to Joseph
