Nerikomi Ceramics Workshop with Cheryl North Coughlan

Nerikomi is a traditional Japanese ceramic technique that involves stacking, layering, and folding different colored clays to create intricate patterns that run throughout the entire piece. This meticulous hand-building method—also known as neriage—requires patience and care, with processes similar to creating glass canes that are sliced, arranged, and compressed into one-of-a-kind works.

In this intimate workshop, students will work with pre-colored porcelain clay to explore this meditative technique firsthand.

During the first session, students will be introduced to the history, styles, and possibilities of Nerikomi before selecting a project, developing a design, and beginning the layering process. A lunch break is built into the class time.

The optional second session offers the opportunity to finish your piece by applying a clear glaze (making it food-safe) or by wet-sanding and waxing for a smooth, matte surface—bringing your work fully to life.

Supplies Provided:
All materials, including pre-colored porcelain clay, tools, and firing, are included.

Adult and youth over 16

Experience Level: Some ceramics experience is helpful, but beginners are warmly welcome

Cheryl North Coughlan is an abstract & ceramic artist and instructor known for her approachable teaching style, whimsical creations and welcoming studio environment.

She enjoys helping students explore clay through both functional and creative forms.
