Refugia of Joseph Canyon: Seeing Nature Through Art & Science Hike & Journaling

Join us for a unique and immersive experience blending art, writing, and science to deepen our connection to the natural world. This special hiking event begins at the Josephy Center with coffee, conversation, and insights from artists and scientists, followed by a guided outing to Joseph Canyon, where participants will engage in the practice of “seeing” nature through different perspectives.
Event Schedule:
☕ 8:00-8:30 AM – Arrive at the Josephy Center, enjoy coffee and refreshments, mingle, and explore art and books.
🎨 8:30-9:00 AM – Conversations with the Artists – Explore how deeper observation inspires artistic and scientific work.
Marina Richie (Nature Writer) – Discusses her writing process, citizen science, and how to “see” as a nature writer.
Robin Coen (Watercolor Artist) – Shares how her painting practice is rooted in the concept of “interbeing” and influences what she observes in the wild.
Jamie Dawson (En Plein Air Painter) – Talks about experiencing the landscape through plein air painting.
Dr. David Mildrexler (Ecologist) explains the ecological significance of Joseph Canyon and how scientific observation shapes his understanding of nature.
SCHEDULE
🚶♂️ 9:15 AM – Depart for Joseph Canyon. Participants will pause along the trail for guided reflection, sketching, and writing exercises to capture their experience.
🏞 2:00-3:00 PM – Return to the Josephy Center.
What to Bring:
- Sack lunch & water
- Hat & backpack
- Notebook/sketchpad, pencil, & eraser
- Hiking shoes
Carpooling is encouraged! Limited spots are available for ride-sharing.
